The general situation and the current scale

With the efforts of several generations, the Otorhinolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery of Xuanwu Hospital of Capital Medical University has been developed into a special specialties, the best leading experts, initial scale of young talents reserve, excelsior technical, both medical teaching and scientific research and a higher specialist influence in China. At present, there are 18 doctors, including 3 chief physicians, 8 deputy chief physicians, 3 attending physicians, 4 resident physicians, and 73% doctoral degree holders or above in senior titles. Our department is a national and Beijing-level standardized training base for resident doctors. All works of medical treatment, teaching and scientific research were carried out, including otology, rhinology, pharyngology, laryngology, head and neck surgery, and skull-base surgery. Among them, rhinology and skull-base surgery are not only our dominant disciplines, but also are in the leading position in China. The department have not only perfect endoscopy, olfactory detection, hearing and balance detection, hearing aid fitting, sleep breathing monitoring and other testing equipment, but also have an independent multimedia classrooms, endoscopic cadaver head training room and related training facilities. We have several advanced equipment included electronic nasopharyngeal laryngoscopes, stroboscopic nasopharyngeal laryngoscopes, Storz high-definition endoscopes, XION 3D high-definition endoscopes, BRAINLAB image navigation systems, Leica surgical microscopes, high-speed electric drills, Medtronic integrated power systems, plasma surgery systems, and DeKalb CO2 laser systems and so on.

Part II: Service Capabilities and Features

The Department of Otorhinolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery in Xuanwu Hospital of Capital Medical University is a national famous 3-level discipline with department of nose and skull-base surgery. The unique technique of our department is the endoscopic skull base surgery with minimal invasiveness. Almost endoscopic surgeries in skull base areas have been initiated and reported by our department in China. The academic leader is Professor Qiuhang Zhang, a renowned expert in nose and skull base surgery in China. He is the winner of the World Outstanding Chinese Endoscopic Award and the International Endoscopic Award in endoscope for outstanding leaders. He has long served as the leading position of the Chinese Medical Association of Otolaryngology, head and neck surgery, and enjoys the state council allowance. In 2 000, after being introduced into our hospital, Professor Qiuhang Zhang has led our department to carry out a large number of high-quality endoscopic surgeries and difficult skull base surgeries. In 2007, the skull-base surgery center was established in China with only close team cooperation with the department of neurosurgery. The overall technical level is equal to the world’s 2 famous skull base surgery centers in the United States and Europe. Through 10 years of hard work, we have broken through a number of previous "surgical exclusion areas", expanded the application of endoscopic skull base surgical techniques in the skull base lesions, and been forming a team with strong overall strength, mature and reliable technology, and widely recognized by domestic and foreign counterparts.

Part III: Teaching and Scientific Research Capabilities

As the only directly affiliated teaching hospital in Capital Medical University, Xuanwu Hospital of Capital Medical University always bears the heavy burden of university education and teaching. The Department of Otorhinolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery has a long history. At the beginning of the establishment, it is responsible for teaching undergraduates in clinical medicine. It is also one of the earliest doctoral graduate training bases and post-doctoral research center in China. It is currently undertaking the teaching and cultivation of undergraduate, seven-year, eight-year, master, doctoral graduate and postdoctoral students. In addition, it is also responsible for the teaching work of Nursing School of Capital Medical University and Nurse School of Xuanwu Hospital. The current director of the department is Professor Zhenlin Wang who is also the vice-president of Otorhinolaryngology Academy at Capital Medical University. He is responsible for the education and teaching of various medical schools at Capital Medical University. Our department is a national and Beijing-level resident training base. All specialist medical treatment, teaching and scientific research work were carried out, including otology, rhinology, pharyngology, laryngology, head and neck surgery and skull base surgery. Since 2002, we have successively hosted 15 National Continuing Education programs named National Learning Class for Endoscopic Skull-Base Surgery and 13 times’ Skull-Base Anatomy Training Classes. We have taken the lead in holding the traning class of national otoendoscope and have been extended the minimally invasive endoscopic surgery to the whole country since 2006. Through these further-education projects, we have trained a large number of professionals for our country. The scientific research work has always been one of the key tasks in teaching hospital. In scientific research, our department has won the National Natural Science Foundation of China, Beijing Natural Science Fund Project, China Postdoctoral Science Fund Project and dozens of scientific research projects at all levels, including the Beijing Municipal Education Commission, the science and Technology Commission, the Health Bureau, etc.. It covers all fields of basic and clinical research, reflecting the strong stamina of sub-professional development in otology, rhinology, pharyngology, laryngology, head and neck surgery, and especially skull-base surgery. Practical research work is sure to bear fruitful results. Many doctors in our department have won the titles of 215 talents and young talents of Beijing Municipal Education Commission, Science and Technology Commission and Capital Medical University. Under the leadership of Professor Qiuhang Zhang, we have won the Beijing Science and Technology Progress Award by “establishment and application of endoscopic skull-base surgery technology system”.

Part IV: Major Honors and Achievements

Academic leader Professor Zhang Qiuhang (PhD supervisor) got Jilin Province Science and Technology Progress Award for “Foundation of Nasal Science and Establishment of Nasal Neurosurgery” in 1996. He also got Chinese Academy of Medical Science Scholarship Award for Chinese Medicine in 1997 and Beijing Science and Technology Progress Award for “establishment and application of endoscopic skull base surgery technology system” in 2014. Professor Qiuhang Zhang won the World Outstanding Chinese Endoscopic Award and the International Endoscopic Award in endoscope for outstanding leaders.

Part V: Featured institutions and Department Introduction

Due to our close relationship with the department of neurosurgery in clinic and scientific research, we united with the departments of neurosurgery and functional neurosurgery to apply for National Key Clinical Specialties and got approved. Based on this foundation, close MDT clinical work and scientific cooperation is being carried out. Meanwhile, our department is the work unit of Professor Zhenlin Wang, vice-president of the Otolaryngology Academy at Capital Medical University and vice-director of the Chronic Rhinosinusitis Treatment Center at Capital medical University. On the basis of above-mentioned framework, we could manage the work assigned to each academy-affiliated hospitals and promote multi-center studies.
